How Senior Citizens Can Save Tax under Section 80D?

Senior citizens can claim a tax deduction of up to ₹50,000 on medical expenses or health insurance premiums under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act, 1961. Since medical expenses increase with age, the Income Tax Act provides senior citizens with tax deductions to reduce out-of-pocket costs and encourage health insurance coverage.

How Senior Citizens Can Avail of Tax Benefits under Section 80D?

Senior citizens can save tax under Section 80D in the following ways:

      • Through Health Insurance: Premium paid for a health insurance policy can be claimed
      • Through Medical Bills: Medical expenses incurred for uninsured senior citizens can be claimed
      Particulars Maximum deduction allowed
Health insurance premium paid by senior citizens ₹50,000
Health insurance premium paid for parents (where the eldest parent is above 60 years) ₹50,000
Medical expenses incurred for an uninsured senior citizen ₹50,000

Depending on the eldest member's age and your family structure, the maximum amount that can be claimed under Section 80D can go up to ₹1 lakh.

How Senior Citizens Can Save Tax With Health Insurance u/s 80D?

As per Section 80D, senior citizens get a tax relief of up to ₹50,000 on the money spent on health insurance policy premiums and preventive health check-ups.

Tax benefits can be availed if a senior citizen pays the premium for their own policy and eligible family members or if a child pays the premium for senior citizen parents.

While preventive health check-ups are eligible for deductions, they can be claimed only up to ₹5,000 per financial year, and are a part of the overall tax deduction limit of ₹50,000 for senior citizens.

Senior citizens can save up to ₹1 lakh of tax under Section 80D. Here's how:

      Particulars Maximum deduction allowed
Premium paid by senior citizens for self, spouse and dependent children ₹50,000
Premium paid by senior citizens for their parents ₹50,000
Total tax deduction limit for senior citizens ₹1 lakh

So, if you are a senior citizen paying health insurance premiums for your senior citizen parents, you can avail a tax benefit of ₹1 lakh (₹50,000 + ₹50,000).

How Senior Citizens Can Save Tax With Medical Bills u/s 80D?

The Income Tax Act allows you to claim a maximum deduction of ₹50,000 on medical expenses incurred for the healthcare of senior citizens. It includes treatments, doctor consultations, medicines and hospital bills.

If a senior citizen does not have health insurance for senior citizens, medical expenses incurred on their treatment can be claimed as tax deductions under this benefit instead of insurance premiums.

      1. Which Medical Expenses are Eligible for Tax Deduction Under Section 80D?

The following medical expenses are eligible for tax deductions under Sec 80D:

        • Hospitalization & treatment
        • Doctor's consultations
        • Medicines
        • Medical devices, such as pacemakers, hearing aids, etc.

It is to be noted that any disease or medical expenses that are not defined in the Income Tax Act won't be covered for deductions under section 80D.

      2. Medical Expenses for Senior Citizens Covered Under Other Sections

In addition to Section 80D, there are certain medical conditions and diseases that are covered under Section 80DDB. These diseases include AIDS, cancer, Parkinson's disease, etc.

While non-senior citizens can avail a deduction of up to Rs 40,000, senior citizens can claim tax deductions of up to ₹1 lakh under this section. So, if the medical condition for which you are paying the bills falls under this category, you can file a tax deduction under Section 80DDB.

If a medical condition does not fall under Section 80DDB or if the limit gets exhausted, you can claim the remaining medical expenses u/s 80D.

What is the Maximum Tax Deduction Limit Under Section 80D?

The table below shows the maximum tax deductions available for senior citizens under Section 80D for different scenarios:

Scenarios Maximum Tax Deduction Limits Total Tax Deduction Allowed under Section 80D
Health insurance premium of self, spouse & children (including preventive health check-up) Health insurance premium and preventive health check-up for parents Medical bills of uninsured senior citizen
      Taxpayer and parents both below 60 years ₹25,000 ₹25,000 N/A ₹50,000
Taxpayer below 60 years and parents above 60 years ₹25,000 ₹50,000 ₹50,000 (in lieu of health insurance premium) ₹75,000
Taxpayer and parents both above 60 years ₹50,000 ₹50,000 ₹50,000 (in lieu of health insurance premium) ₹1 lakh

It is to be noted that the preventive health check-up tax deduction limit of ₹5,000 is not additional; it is covered under the overall Section 80D deduction limit.

Can Senior Citizens Claim for Both – Health Insurance Premiums and Medical Bills?

      No.

Tax deductions of ₹50,000 for senior citizens under Section 80D are available for either health insurance premiums or medical expenses. Both cannot be claimed together.

Medical expenses deduction is allowed only if the senior citizen is uninsured, i.e., no amount has been paid as a health insurance premium for that individual.

If a health insurance premium has been paid for the senior citizen, a tax deduction is available for the paid premium amount, not for their general medical expenses.

How to Pay Health Insurance Premium to Avail Tax Deduction Under Section 80D?

To claim tax deductions under Section 80D, use online payment modes. Do not make cash payments as they are not allowed.

Use debit or credit cards, net banking, cheques or digital payment methods such as UPI and mobile wallets to pay health insurance premiums or medical expenses. However, you can pay for preventive health check-ups in cash.

Documents Required to Claim Tax Benefits under Section 80D

There are no specific document requirements for senior citizens to claim tax deductions for medical bills or health insurance under the Income Tax Act. However, it is recommended to save the relevant documents for at least 5 years in case of tax scrutiny.

Here are the documents you must retain for tax deductions made under Section 80D:

      For health insurance premiums:

      • Proof of premium paid (UPI, net banking or credit & debit cards)
      • Copy of the health insurance policy

If claiming for a preventive health check-up under this section, the diagnostic centre invoice and payment proof are required.

For medical expenses (for uninsured senior citizens):

      • Original medical bills
      • Hospital invoices and discharge summary
      • Bills for doctor's consultations, pharmacy and diagnostics
      • Proof of payment

      Bottom Line

If you are a senior citizen or have elderly parents for whom you pay the premiums or medical bills, then you can claim those expenses too. So, when you file your income tax return for the next financial year or submit your proof at the end of this financial year, don't forget to claim Section 80D deductions and save tax.
