Why Are Add-On Covers in a Two-Wheeler Insurance Policy Required?

NCB Protection for Your Bike Insurance

A No Claim Bonus is a benefit you earn for maintaining a claim-free bike insurance policy. It helps lower your renewal premium over time. However, making a claim can affect this bonus at renewal. NCB Protection is an add-on that allows you to retain your accumulated No Claim Bonus even after raising a claim, helping keep your future premiums more stable.

Why Are Add-On Covers in a Two-Wheeler Insurance Policy Required?

Key Features of NCB Protection Cover

Following are the salient features of NCB protection add-on cover in two-wheeler insurance:

Check some important tips to save bike premium costs:

  1. Your No Claim Bonus stays safe even after a claim

Normally, making even one claim can wipe out your entire No Claim Bonus. With NCB Protection Cover, your accumulated NCB remains unchanged, even if you raise a claim during the policy year.
  2. You can make a claim without losing your NCB

With this add-on, making a claim does not automatically cancel your No Claim Bonus. Most insurers allow one or two claims in a year while keeping your NCB intact.
  3. Works for common real-life claim situations

NCB Protection usually applies to claims related to accidents, partial damage, total loss and theft. This means your NCB remains protected in most situations where riders actually need to raise a claim.
  4. You pay a little extra, save more later

This add-on costs a bit more than your regular premium, but it helps you avoid higher premiums in future renewals.
  5. Can be added while buying or renewing the policy

You can opt for NCB Protection Cover when purchasing a new two wheeler insurance policy or during renewal. Insurers usually offer it only if you already have an existing No Claim Bonus.
  6. Gives you flexibility to claim when it really matters

With NCB Protection in place, you do not have to avoid filing a claim just to save your bonus. You can claim for major repairs while keeping your NCB intact for the next year.
  7. Helps maintain lower premiums over the long term

By protecting your NCB year after year, this add-on helps keep your insurance premiums lower in the long run, especially if you already have a high NCB percentage.

Cost of a No Claim Bonus (NCB) Protection Cover

NCB Protection Cover is not a separate policy. It is an add-on that can be taken only along with a comprehensive or standalone own-damage bike insurance policy. This means it gets added to your existing premium, not bought on its own.

In terms of cost, NCB Protection usually increases your premium by around 5% to 10%. The final amount differs from one insurer to another and also depends on your bike and existing NCB.

What matters more than the percentage is what this extra cost is protecting. If you have built up a high NCB over the years, one claim can wipe out a sizeable discount at renewal. NCB Protection helps avoid that sudden jump in premium.

To put it simply, here’s how the cost plays out for most riders:

  • You pay a small extra amount along with your regular premium.
  • higher your NCB, the more value this add-on usually offers.
  • The cost is often recovered in the very next renewal if your NCB remains unchanged.
  • It makes more sense for riders with a clean claim history than for new policyholders.
In short, NCB Protection Cover is not about reducing your premium today. It is about preventing a bigger increase tomorrow. If keeping your renewal premium stable matters to you, the additional cost is usually worth it.

How Does NCB Protection Work?

Let's find out how NCB protection cover works with the help of an example:

Mr. Kartik bought a comprehensive bike insurance policy along with an NCB protection add-on cover. His first-year premium was ₹2,000. Since he didn't file a claim, the second-year premium dropped to ₹1800. Unfortunately, he had an accident in the second year and filed a claim. Thanks to the NCB protection, his third-year premium still dropped to ₹1600, and the accumulated bonus remained intact.

  • Q.7 How to get an NCB certificate?

Ans: In case you are planning to change your insurance provider, you can easily transfer your accumulated bonus (NCB) from one insurer to another, you must issue an NCB certificate from your previous insurer to get it transferred.
